Leiter Works on Display at the Jewish Museum in New York

Several Saul Leiter photographs, in both color and black and white, are included in the group show Modern Look: Photography and the American Magazine at the Jewish Museum in New York City.

Modern Look explores the fruitful era from the late 1930s through the 1950s, during which photography became instrumental in the growth of large-circulation mass-media publications, such as Life and Look, patterned after European news magazines,” writes JM senior curator Mason Klein, who organized the exhibition. “Whether working independently or on assignment, Saul Leiter, Louis Faurer, and William Klein ... [exploited] the possibilities of commercial work while elevating street photography almost to the level of abstraction.”

Modern Look closes on July 11, 2021.
