New Exhibition Saul Leiter: Origins in Color Opens in Tokyo
Featuring ten slide projectors in a large black-box space, Saul Leiter: Origins in Color, hosted by the Bunkamura Museum, is now open at Hikarie Hall (ninth floor) in Tokyo’s Shibuya neighborhood. The approximately 250 projections include images from the 2022 book The Unseen Saul Leiter, plus a wide selection of photographs from the color slide archive being shown for the first time. Complementing the slide shows is a selection of black-and-white prints, including Leiter’s photographs of the fellow artists he rubbed elbows with in mid-twentieth-century New York, and 30 paintings set against iconic photographs from Leiter’s first monograph, Early Color. Rounding out the presentation is a simulation of Leiter’s studio, displaying the artist’s work equipment and personal effects. Origins in Color is open through August 23, 2023.
Meanwhile, Morioka Shoten presents a parallel pop-up exhibition of Leiter’s collection of Japanese art books and ukiyo-e prints, on the eight floor of the Hikarie building, though July 23. The exhibition includes related photographs by Yumiko Izu and paintings by Asa Hiramatsu.
